Plates of vegetarian food, juices and sweet treats at Mother, Here East

MUST DO: Mother, Here East

It's only a walk or cycle from the neighbourhood - so cosy up in its waterside setting this weekend, says Miranda Eason

Joining the Here East line-up in November 2016, Mother is a plant-based café that looks as if it leapt directly out of a dream interiors Pinterest board. There’s squishy sofas, sharing tables with bench seating, chunky blue crockery, shelves heaving with potted plants and a hanging wicker egg chair that’s been all over Instagram. Even better, everything on the menu is vegan.

Breakfast is served until 11.30am and includes the ubiquitous smashed avocado and sourdough, here topped with chilli flakes and sesame seeds, as well as loaded frozen acai bowls and toasted club sandwiches (available all day). My fave? The sarnie that fuelled last summer, the non-tuna mayo – chickpeas, celery and dill mashed with creamy cashew mayo, tomato and lettuce, between slices of toasted E5 sourdough.

If chilly mid-February days have you craving heartier food, the menu also includes burgers, curries, soups and seasonal specials. The smoky spiced pulled jackfruit, red pepper and mixed bean chilli served with rice is a comforting hug-in-a-bowl of a dish.
