This weekend! E17 and E11 Art Trails. Plus July highlights

It's the month when everything happens. Two arts trails, outdoor theatre, street festivals and more across E11, E10 and E17

It’s a big month for the whole area, as July always was back in the olden days (do things feel normal yet, though?) First up are the two arty happenings which – we think – sum up the unique spirit of this part of east London.

Leytonstone Arts Trail returns (read about the last one in 2019) with 70 exhibitions in E10 and E11 across studios, galleries, gardens, businesses and more. These include the Stone Mini Market, TBC, the Red Lion, the new Unity Cafe, Venner, the Heathcote & Star, House of Dan, and many more.

The detailed map of all the locations is here – but your best bet is to wander and see what you discover (the more organised might wish to plot a route through the postcodes, of course). Dates are 3rd, 4th, 10th & 11th July, more info @leytonstonearts or online.

Just up the road is its big sister, E17 Art Trail, which runs from now until 18th July. Dating back to 2004, this is a very long-established and even more sprawling affair: with 300 events and exhibitions, over 200 venues will play host with individual and group exhibitions, garden displays, open homes and studios, online and offline workshops and performances from a whopping 2,500 exhibitors. Jeepers.

There’s even a physical guide you can pick up with a handy IRL map and info about artists and locations: get yours and more info here. Our main pic (above, photo credit: Jane Sharp) is Veronica Lindsay-Addy in the Creative Art Show at Big Creative Academy, Clifton Avenue E17 6HL (venue 13 in the printed Trail Guide). In true overlapping Venn Diagram style, the Terrace Gallery in Leyton, which reopened this week, provides a cunning link as the only venue part of both trails. ‘Studio Confetti’ is a large show of small paintings curated by Terrace founder Karl Bielik: originally located in Hackney, the gallery is now in the back room at the William the Fourth pub, 816 Leyton High Road E10. Don’t forget Francis Road Street Party on July 4th (both 11am-3pm), with live music, stalls, tombola and more.

On 10th and 24th July, South Leytonstone charity Cann Hall Can launch their Summer Saturdays with live musicians in the skate park (1030am-1230) by the gorgeous Patch Cafe. Follow @cannhallcann

The East London Shakespeare Festival comes to E10’s Jubilee Park with A Midsummer Night’s Dream this month. With BYO picnics welcomed, this is “outdoor Shakespeare with a twist,” with live music and showstopper numbers. Dates are: Lloyd Park, 8th – 11th July, Jubilee Park, 15th – 18th July, Wanstead Park, 31st July – 1st August. More info.

Finally a contemporary circus, The Wing Scuffle Spectacular, comes to Leyton Jubilee Park on 29th July until 8th August. A “joyous, absurd flirtation with danger,” it’s an immersive affair that features large-scale circus disciplines such as teeterboard, cloud swing and tightwire in a big-top. Tickets here

Please support us if you can

We may have just reached our 6th birthday, and have a bigger audience and social media following than ever before, but due to advertising revenues in freefall both Leytonstoner and our small network of independent online titles is under threat. As readers we need your support more than ever to keep delivering ‘good-news’ cultural stories that celebrate our wonderful neighbourhoods. Every reader or business contribution, however big or small, is invaluable in helping the costs of running the website and the time invested in the research and writing of the articles published. Support Leytonstoner here for less than the price of a coffee and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
