Black History Month 2021: three local highlights

From foraging in the forest to local history walks, we pick a trio of highlights across the borough

Foraging In The Forest

Tomorrow (9th Oct), Rasheeqa Ahemd from E17’s Hedge Herbs leads a foraging trip and ‘fire vinegar’ tonic-making session as part of Black History Month. Meeting at St Peter’s-in-the-Forest church in E17, the walk takes you through the local forest looking for seasonal roots and berries. You’ll learn how to make ‘fire cider’ while learning about its usage. All the necessary ingredients will be provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own too. Recipes, medicinal and culinary, using the plants, spices, and ingredients discussed will be collected and compiled into a booklet, drawing out links between plants and practices in the Caribbean and the UK. Freedom Walk

Take a Black History walk across Leyton with Peter Ashan (pictured above), a local author, educator and historian. Peter has written a book, ‘Freedom Walk: The Roots of Diversity in Waltham Forest’, a pocket-sized walking guide to sites where notable Black people spent their lives, from businesses to school teachers, football stars and festival organisers. There is a suggested £8 contribution for this event, the money collected on the day goes to a Black charity serving the community. Sunday 10th October, 10am, Ia Adelaide Road E10, more info.

Meet The Author: Sharon Louison

Next Thursday 14th October, Sharon Louison will be reading from her book “Labour Of Love” in Leyton Library in celebration of Black History Month. The book talks about the journey of her grandparents,  and her mother’s trials and tribulations as she left to start a life in England…. However, life was not wonderful at all; in fact, far from it.
