If you’ve not checked Zambrero out yet, you’re in for a treat, people. The nearest branch of this ethical new Australian arrival, if you live in the Leytonstone area, is only a handful of stops away on the Central Line. And better still, what better incentive to visit than a free burrito?

With a fresh take on Mexican favourites, Zambrero’s focus on ‘fusion’ flavours, modern superfood ingredients and specially crafted marinades gives a lighter twist to traditional Mexican classics, and the restaurant’s Australian roots mean a brilliantly welcoming atmosphere.

Inside the restaurant you’ll not only be greeted by the friendly faces of the Loughton team, many of whom are locals, but also by a bright Zambrero green wall counter, clocking up meals donated. With a mission to stop world hunger, the restaurant, which opened at the end of last year, donates a meal to someone in need for every burrito or bowl purchased through its Plate4Plate initiative and via its humanitarian partner Rise Against Hunger. Through its global network, Zambrero has donated over 57 million meals and counting.

UK Chief Executive Officer Emily Teh says: “We’ve had such a warm welcome from the local community in Loughton and are so grateful for the support they’ve shown us for our Plate4Plate program. Every burrito or bowl given out on Thursday for 1000 Free Burritos Day will still generate a food donation to someone in need.”

There’s a fantastic range of flavours from the vegan Chilli ‘Zin’ Carne through to tasty Barbacoa Beef, Pulled Pork and Zam Chicken. “You can choose your style and design your meal just as you like it,” she says, “from our guacamole that’s smashed daily, to our speciality sauces.”

So yes, it’s a win-win. The more Zambrero you eat, the more we can all help the hungry of the world, and the better we all feel. Zambrero call it Feel Good Mex. And we’re inclined to agree.

So what’s the backstory?
Zambrero’s journey started out in Canberra, Australia, founded by then-medical student, Dr Sam Prince, who wanted to serve good food that did good. This led him to create an initiative that would in turn deliver millions of meals to people in need the world over and make an impact on the state of world hunger. Over time, Zambrero has grown from humble roots to more than 200 restaurants across the globe, from Australia and the US to Ireland and New Zealand – and now the UK. Already established in Kentish Town and Loughton, Zambrero have just opened their third restaurant in Twickenham and are looking forward to opening in Chelmsford in the not-too-distant future.

Emily says she would like everyone who eats at Zambrero to know that they can feel good about everything they come away with. “In addition to our Plate 4 Plate initiative, which aims to donate a billion meals by 2025, we carefully source our drinks and use sustainable packaging which we compost through our partnership with The Compost Network,” she says.

Eat in, takeaway or order delivery online – choose from a selection of tasty burritos, bowls, nachos, tacos, salad and quesadillas with the best sauces and toppings. Mains from £6.50, sides from £3.
