This Weekend: Black History Month, 3 foodie pop-ups and Panrucker

Don't miss Stow Film Lounge tomorrow, plus awesome pop-ups at Arch Deli, Libertalia and Stone Mini Market

CULTURE: Black History Month

Tomorrow (Oct 5th) marks the start of Black History Month with a film screening of Aretha Franklin doc Amazing Grace. It was meant to be outdoors on Fellowship Square lawns in Walthamstow, but with the temperature a chilly 13 degrees they’ve wisely now moved it inside the Town Hall. Film starts 7.15pm, Tickets from £8 at Stow Film Lounge, here.

Next weekend (Saturday October 12th, 1-3pm), is a free art activity workshop at William Morris Gallery, main pic above, with artists Sharon Foster and Jacqueline McFarlane exploring different techniques including drawing, collage and printing, inspired by contemporary Black British artists (more info here).

And there are two free events in Leytonstone, both on Wednesday October 16th. First up is the free Black History Month Craft Session at Leytonstone Library (330pm), and then at 730pm, at St John’s Church Hall, is a talk by Claire Weiss and Geoff Nicholls on Slave Trade Abolition, Leytonstone House, the Buxtons and Black History (read my 2020 feature on the subject here).

FOOD: Three Weekend Pop-ups: Polska Kitchen, Parma Medics and Arch Rivals

As we describe in way more detail in this week’s newsletter (hint: subscribe here), there’s a fantastic trio of foodie pop-ups across Leyton and Leytonstone this weekend.

First up is Polska Kitchen, rocking up at the lovely Arch Deli tonight (Friday), with a menu including Polish smalec (a herby pork lard) and pickles (£7), and cured herring, rye and trout caviar (£7) (follow @archdeli_e11 and @polskakitchen).

Tomorrow sees Australian-owned streetfood ex-ambulance Parma Medics showing up all day at Libertalia for chicken and eggplant parmas (follow @libertaliabrewingco and @parma_medics), while on Sunday Forest Gate’s Arch Rivals are at Stone Mini Market with their Oktoberfest menu of crispy pork knuckle fritter with sauerkraut, currywurst with curried tomato sauce and fries, and hotdogs with sauerkraut (follow @archrivals_e7). Tick ’em all off.

Finally, this E17 arrival is just a short hop from Leyton Green on Beulah Road, on the edge of Walthamstow Village. Their first exhibition, Something Quickening, features four female artists taking their body as their subject. It’s open to the public from today (4th) right up to the 19th October, Thursdays to Saturdays, 12-5pm. Follow @panrucker.gallery

We are about to reach our 10th birthday and have a bigger audience and social media following than ever before, but due to advertising revenues in freefall both Leytonstoner and our small network of independent online titles is under threat. As readers we need your support more than ever to keep delivering ‘good-news’ cultural stories that celebrate our wonderful neighbourhoods. Every reader or business contribution, however big or small, is invaluable in helping the costs of running the website and the time invested in the research and writing of the articles published.
