he ModernPotter is a local artist who’s curating an event at Host of Leyton this month. The evening will feature the works of eleven London-based ceramicists, who’ll be exhibiting and selling their wares in the stylish space on the High Road.

James Pallister and Nicola Readare are the enterprising couple behind the venue, a beautifully renovated place with large windows that flood the space with light.

ModernPotter creates one-off stoneware pots and sculptured vessels. “They combine an earthy modern aesthetic whilst exploring forms and textures in pursuit of a simple beauty,” she says.

After spending many years as a graphic designer and creative art director for fashion brands, she wanted to give something back to herself, and in March 2017 attended a short introduction ceramics course at Turning Earth. “I immediately felt connected,” she says, “it was so innate, I was compelled to discover more.” She left her job a year ago and since then has been developing her craft. “Working with clay makes me feel free, I love to see what comes from my hands.”

And what will the other ten creatives be showcasing? “Each will bring their own style, ranging from minimal to playful, with a fix of function and ornamental,” she says.

Head to E10, meet these skilled artisans and view some inspiring (and affordable) pieces.

The evening of ceramics is taking place at Host of Leyton, Thurs 13th Sept from 5.30–10pm at 658 High Road, E10. Follow ModernPotter on Instagram @modernpotteruk. More here.
