MUST DO: Perky Blenders, Leyton

It's not just about coffee. Expect supper clubs, pop-ups, cocktails, a nice garden and tons of craft beer

The best pun-tastic name ever (at least for a beans purveyor in east London) has just opened probably the best coffee shop in the area.

You will of course be aware that a few months back E17 coffee merchants Perky Blenders landed right in the heart of Leytonstone’s manically busy underground station.

Next to slightly sleepier Leyton Midland (and of course multi-use space Host), their new gaff is the essence of neighbourhood hangout – and made for weekend loafing.

But what’s their USP? Perky Blenders – that’s Tom, Adam and Victoria – are small batch, speciality grade coffee roasters, who have carts and concessions across east London. We’re pleased to report thatv our first long black in Project 660 last week was delectably strong and smooth. And the right acidity, too.

At this new shop there’s a shabby chic salvaged furniture-filled main room (pictured above), with a cute garden out back, which plays host to all manner of pop-ups and one-offs, from Vietnamese suppers to cocktail clubs. There are also tables and chairs on the actually-quite-leafy pavement in front of the shop.

Thirsty punters can knock back beer from E10’s Signature and Wild Card breweries (in Leyton and E17 respectively), plus superior wine and cocktails. And, better still, it’s open till pub closing time on weekend nights.

In all, ideal for that parched moment when you step off yet another packed rush-hour train – as well as first thing in the morning, firmly in recovery mode.

Perky Blenders, Project 660, 660 High Road E10 6JP, open till 11pm Thurs-Sat. More info
